O'Neil, who was still in high school year at the time of the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performances. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned at this, and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the third place again. She was the judge. Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
